We use a 3 month algacide that has really done the trick! Prior to this discovery we were in the black lagoon and since then we have had a crystal clear pool---it has been truly amazing--don't wait until you have evidence of the need for an algaecide--use it to prevent it!!
Then don't use anything else but soda, chlorine, maybe some clarifier, and the tablets in the skimmer. Where we live the alkalinity of the water tends to get low instead of high---I use a dip stick to check it before I think it may be time to shock (monthly) and if it looks low I just dump several lbs of soda in the water--brush it around a little--then add the chlorine directly to the skimmer with the pump in recirculate mode. This takes care of it just fine---remember that it is better to put less than too much chemicals into your pool.
Soda, chlorine, and clarifier--that's all you need

janet i need your help.our pool is already green and can't get it clear.when we go to the pool supply we always need something else."soda" do you mean(baking soda)?and that is to keep it clear. how did you clear it first?we have algaecide but is that just after it is clear?
Hi Vicki, Sorry it has been so
long since I've checked this blog --if you still have your pool and I am sure you have gotten a good handle on it by now. Yes, I used the algaecide after I shocked the pool ---but before i shocked it, I made sure baking soda (yes) was added to bring the ph and alkin up to par---Then by putting the algaecide in, it was able to clear up---has been clear since and I talking YEARS--Thanks for your comment and I'm sorry let this blog go unchecked
